Let's Collect Donations!

While I was researching an organization I discovered The Children Memorial Hospital or possible a smaller organization that deals with kids. The Children Memorial Hospital is always trying to have people to donate; to help save a child’s life. They have plenty of success stories. This should affect many people because no one wants to see children suffer. We want to have good health care, this is a start.  This is a really good cause because so many kids are dying from diseases or will not be able to experience everything as healthy child would. I can see it work; while standing on Michigan Avenue or State Street handing out brochures, and flyers with donation boxes while trying to catch their attention. Since some people do not like random people coming up to them, I was thinking maybe someone or I wear a funny costume. I picked a costume because when people are prancing around in costumes, people have the urge to laugh and take pictures. So I thought that would be a way to catch their attention especially since this is a tourist city.

My expierence in Groups.

I’m excellent in groups. I recently finished a group project in my sex in advertising class. I hated it. It was challenging because no one in my group was listening to my ideas. I was going crazy. It started to become very tense. I am a very blunt person. So after awhile it was starting to become very irritating. I tried to explain to her (in email) what the problem was and she was acting like I was attacking her. That was not the case. Other than that I am good in groups and have great ideas to offer.

"Fuck Wikepedia" Draft :) A Rough Draft.

Boystown, Chicago
Boystown is one of Chicago's more popular communities. Boystown is located just southeast of Wrigleyille in the Lakeview area. Boystown was the first officially recognized gay village in the United States. Over the years Boystown has become a cultural center for the LGBT community.

Boystown is known for it's nightlife and atmosphere. There are also plenty of great vintage retail shops, bars, restaurants, and hookah bars etc...  The Alley,Ragstock, Club Spin, The Playground Theatre, House of Hookah, Samah, Clarks, Nookies Tree house, Beatnix,Philly's Pizza, a barber shop called "Great Head",Forever Yogurt, sidetrack, and The Famous Kumas Corner, and adult sex shops. These are just a few of the places to go in Boystown.

VIOLENCE

Although Boystown seems like a great community, violence is a very big issue. There are controversies that Boystown’s community  center on Halsted is attracting violence. The LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual Transgender) community is provides support for the gay community but it is turning into a rehab instead. It’s  attracting young minorities that loiter all day and night scaring the elders of the gay community. The elders of this community wish that it will be better segregated as it was back in their time because of the disturbance from the younger individuals. Before LGBT was The Rodde Center and that was formed after a popular gay bartender named Frank Rodde, who was brutally murdered in 1977 and they created this center but it had closed down due to the economy back in the late 90’s. Then LGBT was built in its place.
PROSTITUTION
The prostitution in Boystown. Although not heavily talked about in the media. Prostitution does exsist in Boystown. Just as recently as 2004 19 suspected prosititutes 4 of them women were caught in a stig operation in the lakeview community around Belmont and Sheffield avenue.

Third Boystown Stabbing In As Many Weeks Caught On Video.” Huffington Post.05 July. 2011. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/05/third-boystown-stabbing-i_n_890411.html
The article on the Huffington Post explains in more details of the Boystown Stabbing.  This article also provides the actual video on the link and explains more on the positive acts such as the face book page Take Back Boystown and (Caps) and the event they held to raise awareness about crime. The feedback was very negative from the citizens that reside in Boystown. The neighborhood’s Alderman expressed that he is concerned and explains that the police and The North Halsted Business Alliance are working on ways to provide additional security. The North Halsted Business Alliance is a small group of retailers that promotes the street and is recognized for their major force in the community. This article feature authoritative figures but maybe isn’t authoritative (not so sure) enough because it is not well known and it is also is a community blog. Since it is a blog is not considered credible.

Chicago Tribune

Huppke, Rex. Trice, Dawn. Gorner, Jeremy. “Weekend Stabbing Adds to Boystown’s Street-Crime Woes.” Chicago Tribune. Ed. Bruce Dold. 06 July. 2011. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-07-06/news/ct-met-boystown-fight-20110706_1_boystown-weekend-fight-young-people

Chicago Tribune reporters described the Boystown stabbing that was caught on video. Boystown residents continue to debate on how to stop the crime in Boystown. Many opinions were stated that it could possibly be the black gay youths that hang around the Halsted Center. Some individuals stated that despite the crime, Boystown is still a good neighborhood. The other half explains that they are scared to walk around at night and feels that the neighborhood is unsafe. Another response feels that those youths from the center mean no harm. Many of the residents are mistaken this issue as a racial matter and that the easy solution is to kick them out so Boystown can re-establish as a good community once again. Chicago Tribune is a credible site. Many people read the Chicago Tribune. Chicago Tribune target audience is the Boystown residents, Chicago, and the gay community. The Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (Caps) is the authority of this issue because it is the community and the Chicago police department working together to find solutions in fighting against crime and community policing.

Gays Vs. The Rest Of The World

Although Boystown seems like a great community, violence is a very big issue. There is violence everywhere but the violence in Boystown may be affecting their community. I just recently found out that Boystown was a bad neighborhood to live in. I never would have thought it was but it was a real eye opener. In this article, http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/07/queer_theory_vs_reality_in_chicagos_boystown.html  it talks about how Boystown’s community blames the center on Halsted for attracting violence. The LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual Transgender) community is supposedly provides support for the gay community but its turning into a rehab instead. It’s also attracting young minorities that loiter all day and night scaring the elders of the gay community. Violence is still a big issue in Boystown till this day because of anti-gay attacks. Since Boystown is still segregated from the rest of Chicago: Is that causing a war with individuals that are against homosexuality? Isn’t that making it worse? Would it be better to just destroy Boystown as a community, since anti-gay attacks will continue to happen?

"Wikepedia: Let's See What You Have To Say About Boystown"

In my last entry I wrote on Boystown and how it was unique. Finding information on Boystown was a little difficult. I was looking forward to the background/history on Boystown but didn't find much. Wikepedia did have a site on Boystown but it wasn't enough. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boystown,_Chicago It will mostly tell you where it’s located, the things that it’s famous for, and events. Basic things a reader would be interested in. I want to know how long it’s been there and how exactly it got its name. I read some where it was called new town and then formed into Boystown. I want to know if this actually true or not. In my perspective Wikepedia lacks history for me but when it comes to interesting material like events or celebrities gossip it's really good. But Boystown information is a little short and vague. For such a great community in Chicago it might be surprising of the true story of Boystown.

Boystown!!!!!!!

The place I like to visit the most of all of Chicago is "Belmont Avenue" located on the north side of Chicago.

The nickname for this area is Boystown. Boystown has a very big gay community. I love to be apart of the gay community. What i find unique in Boystown are the people and the cool places you can go.

There are so many people that have different types of styles. I love how they can express it without people caring. Belmont gives me inspiration for my creative side. Many people stand out and have very different looks and many people disagree with it. Since i fell in love with this place all i began to hear people say is
"Your Weird'', my first reaction will be,"Well define what is normal". In Boystown, they seem to be like everyone else maybe even a little happier.

There are so many events, places, and shops that are located in Boystown!

You have: The Alley,Ragstock, Club Spin, The Playground Theatre, A few hookah bars (my personal favorite, House of Hookah), Clarks, Nookies Tree house, Beatnix,Philly's Pizza, a barber shop called "Great Head",Forever Yogurt, sidetrack, and The Famous Kumas Corner, and plenty of vintage and adult sex shops.

"LADY GAGA VISITS KUMAS CORNER EACH TIMES SHE IN CHICAGO"

The Gay Pride Parade comes through Boystown Every Year! Random Festivals, Block Parties, and Carnivals. It's So Much Fun!

Gay Pride Parade!

HALLOWEEN FIRE SHOW!
One thing you might or might not know is that Boystown Chicago was the first recognized "Gay Village" in the United States!Yes we beat out San Francisco.Boystown is also one of the largest cultural center for the gay, lesbians, bi and transgender communities in the nation.Boystown is not just for gays. It's for everyone. Boystown is just a big community that has great parties because it won't stop until 5 am. So have fun!

"Round Two" U.S Vs. Borders.

In the class discussion about conservatives vs. liberals views on immigration was a bit shocking. Let’s back track. Conservatives are very strict and are money hungry. They feel like their beliefs make the world go round and that liberals are just dead weight. Their views are entirely different. “For every action there is an equal and opposite government program” (Bob Wells). Conservatives enjoy human suffering. They seem to feel as if you have set yourself up to fail then deal with it. Liberals are more welcoming with open arms and are more accepting no matter what’s the situation.  There has been statements in the media regarding, U.S President Barrack Obama; stating that Obama might not be liberal enough because he is ready to secure the borders! Immigration is becoming a really huge problem. Conservatives are against immigrants crossing the border without papers. Yes it’s illegal but I’m sure we can overlook that as a country. The main reason why illegal immigrants are coming to the U.S is because in search for jobs. They want to better their lives, who are we to stop them. Oh yes, were one “Nation”. We are a family that agrees to disagree.

We point our fingers at them blaming them  saying they are stealing our jobs! It cant be that easy to steal jobs. They are simply taking the jobs nobody wants and especially for low pay.
Check this out.
Coalition for the Future American Worker Ad: "Elevator"
Narrator: Another American has lost his job. Another breadwinner going home with the bad news.
Nearly 15 million Americans are now out of work. High-tech, construction and auto workers. Engineers.
Yet with millions jobless, our government is still bringing in a million-and-a-half foreign workers a year to take American jobs.
Could your job be next? Find out how you can help save jobs for American workers at AmericanWorker.org.
Paid for by the Coalition for the Future America Worker.

The following sentence that is highlighted is very important. "Our government" is responsible for this. We are responsible for this. We are their bosses. Were are in charge. We are hiring them!

They are our maids, butchers, janitors, construction workers. They are willing to get there hands dirty! Conservatives are all about hard work and responsibility and should see eye to eye with the "Aliens". Hypocrisy is what that is. They just want the borders to be secure to make sure the competition that WE  HIRE stay out of the U.S.

Most liberals are open to immigration and feel that they should receive the same rights as Americans. Immigration is a human right. This next article was really interesting.  Robert Martinez who is the director of the U.S/ Mexico Border program speaks out on the issues. http://www.inmotionmagazine.com/border.html

They are asking for our help and we are turning our heads. They are human beings too! Here is a video of a teenager that gets shot and killed by U.S border patrol!  The video was released so they were able to express their judgement.Arresting them is one thing but killing them is wrong. But because they are illegal, They're the Criminals?? We're not very neighborly after all.

I feel very passionately on this subject because as being Hispanic myself; immigration has torn my family apart. I am the only one in my family that has dual-citizenship. My family is split in half because my parents are here along with my sister but my brothers and my remaining family still resides in panama. Now I associate with many "illegal immigrants" and they are really intelligent. Sadly they are unable to further their education because they don't have their papers. Finding jobs are difficult for them. They either have fake I.D's or are just very lucky that someone will say, "Your hired!". This situation is sad. We should at least meet each other half way.

"So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing" (Led Zeppelin,"Immigrant Song").

"Let's ALL Hug & Do it our Way" :)

I never really put in any thought about the difference between being liberal or conservative. I never really thought politics of being interesting at all.  Every situation varies. Lakoff’s framing of the strict father vs. the nurturant parent role made it simple enough to understand both sides. It’s a game of good cop and bad cop. It seems the strict father role is the bad cop because they are very firm with their decisions .They believe in idependence and nothing is wrong with that. The problem with how society might view conservatives; they are viewed as pessimistic assholes. Conservatives are the representation of strength. Their opinions may feel that it will build our country strong. Prison and the death penalty it’s some examples of their way of punishment. We grow from punishment. It molds us into a better person and opens our perception beyond what was already there and it’s keeps building.
We all view punishment differently. We all have different views of politics. It’s laid out there your either conservative or liberal. When voting time comes your either republican or a democrat and when your speaking to someone on the opposing side; you can tell their slightly offended. Many individuals are probably torn in between. No one wants to be a bad guy, but it will seem to be a bit naïve if you’re alright will all bad behavior or keep giving out slaps on the wrist.  I haven’t figured out which side I’m on just yet. I feel like I fall in the middle. I feel that I am all for punishment but then I don’t feel like it’s the solution for everything. My opinion is still up in the air.
Liberals are very nurturing and supportive. Liberals believe in equal in opportunities. Nurturing requires a lot of care and understanding. They build a great support system. A good support system also would help American become strong. They help to find balance so everyone wins. They are very overprotective and are willing to give a helping hand. They represent the good cop in this situation.  In the reading it was stated that being liberal resembles the female role in a family. Although their outlook on things is very positive, sometimes it may seem as they don’t have a voice.
If a man is in charge then he is right without any discussion. That shows no equality. Each side seems very sketchy. As long as there is some disagreement in things and disciplined is expressed then both sides have authority.  They may not have authority over each other because everything is really different. No one actually wants to hear the opposing teams’ side. For example; that’s like discussing issues and working things out in a debate. Liberals would love that but conservatives might find it as a sign a weakness. You can’t be a winner if you won’t stand up for what you believe in. It's a never ending debate!!

"Nobody likes a TattleTale" :O

The article I chose had a very interesting title. At first glance I thought it was simply about phone hacking but when it was read the article is suggesting that the British government wants the reporters of the newspapers to give up their confidential sources. In doing so, it would destroy the integrity of the reporters and the newspapers. Confidential informants are confidential for a reason. If you (the paper or reporter) reveal your sources it will make you untrustworthy. It wouldn’t make the newspaper look good to give out names. The Met police want people to reveal that type of information because it links potential damaging evidence in a case. If newspapers and reporters were to just start handing over information to the police no one would ever want to share information with that paper again for fear of being turned over to the police. Then what’s the point of being a C.I? In America we have a different outlook on informants. Although primarily used by law enforcement agents C.I’s done consort with reporters. In the U.K. there is no way to be anonymous because of their Official Secrets Act. The British Government is trying to embed in our heads that it’s alright to give out leaked information when it’s involving a murder case or any case for that matter. When the police ask for the papers to divulge privilege information such as names as informants they are infringing people rights to freedom of press. Freedom of press is the right to publish newspapers, magazines, and other printed matter without governmental restriction and subject only to the laws of libel, obscenity, sedition, etc.(dictionary.com). The police are infringing on freedom of press that essentially saying that if you don’t want us to ask about your C.I’s and turn it over to us then you shouldn’t write about it. If you do then it’s violating the Official Secrets Act.

Hello Friends!!!

(Hello friends!!)  P.S. I love Bunnies!!

Well that was a pretty cool assignment. I loved reading Calvert Miles's Blog. It was never a dull moment in his writing. http://cmiles7949.blogspot.com/

I loved how your able to feel that he has one middle finger to the world. But I commented his education blog saying how school is not that bad.  School isn’t that depressing. Teacher’s do the best they can to accommodate the students. Not all teachers but most. There are plenty a ways to entertain your education.  Clubs, party with some friends, play a sport can sometimes be entertaining.

I also enjoyed reading Joslyn Walton's Blog. Our private school expierence's matched really well.

I loved her outlook on private school. It was very uplifting because I would have kept talking about how much it sucked. I’m happy to be out of there!

Population Decreasing-Get over it.

In my group our articles were focused on minorities (Latinos and African Americans) and how they are leaving Chicago. Data shows that Latinos are migrating to Chicago and African Americans are moving out of Chicago. African Americans are migrating to the south or to the suburbs. That leaves the population steadily decreasing. The problem is that Chicago’s City Council would need to adjust the 50 ward map to renew the population that is currently residing in Chicago. That would be disturbing to the political power in Chicago. In my perspective the people have all the power because it is having an effect on the government. So if we want to leave, we can leave. They shouldn't stop us. One article was based on the soul food in Chicago.(This is not a big issue, Soul Food, They can make themselves). Their Worries are that the number of people that come in had decreased over the years. Soul food restaurants continue to close since business is bad. A few of the business owners feel that the reason behind the empty restaurants that once has been full; is because of the bad economy. In the article stated that their reason was the decrease in blacks in Chicago was because they want to pursue a better life and new jobs. They claim that the blacks that migrate away from Chicago are well educated or already have some success in their lives and are seeking more opportunities. In all the other articles were concentrating on crime and more evidence of the decrease in population. That would lead to the main frame which is population is decreasing due to blacks migrating. In the article that talks about the soul food and their concerns are the culture of soul food dying off.  I understand that the food is delicious but I doubt that that’s enough for blacks to stay. In the other article it felt that just because Barrack Obama was the first black president it was going to even attract more people to come to Chicago; just because he is a Chicagoan. City council is wrong. I feel that they should accept it as is and just either adjust the 50 ward map by either percentages of population instead of race  or accept the race that still reside in Chicago. Blacks and Latino’s are searching for better lives and city council shouldn’t get in the way of that. The people made their choice they have the power now. But because of blacks leaving Chicago the African American culture in the black community will be disappear or shut down because there are no supporters. The power of the government In Chicago will decrease when it’s around voting time. It will probably be a fight between democrats and republican parties. City council will still wait for the day of reverse migration. Migration has been going on for a very long time and there has been a lot of success even this economy; so that won’t stop the decrease in the African American population. I would say "Let me leave before i walk right through you".  :)

News: He said, She said. ----Here Say.

Understanding the four year old boy wanted to be a policeman; but cropping it out to stereotype and cause shivers down a few spines upset me. The news channel is so desperate for viewers. They will do anything to keep a buck in their pocket.   I can understand if the parents were embarrassed to see this which says the news is cold hearted. They want to portray a certain image towards African Americans. Reading between the lines, they are saying “The big bad wolf is going to blow your house down with a few pistols”.      Big Bad Wolf meaning African Americans. The reason I compare a wolf to African Americans because racism is still going on today. A wolf (Slang Term) is a “person that is regarded as predatory, rapacious, and fierce. They normally stick to themselves but, if threatened or someone starts a fight with them in school for example. They won't hold back and will probably hurt you. They are normally gruff on the outside but can be overcome if you are nice enough to them. Usually very very strong. There are a few per school or office” - (The dark one) http://wolf.urbanup.com/1125362. A few Caucasians are still scared for their lives when they see one or a few black people on the street; Assuming all are African Americans are criminals and exchanging dirty looks. Reframing the dialogue between the reporter and the four year old was to send out a message to change viewer’s perspective on young black people. The editing of the story was also to give viewers a mental picture of the uprising of crime everywhere. It was to give them more support on which side they will choose. It was to shock a lot of people because "Every action has a reaction, everything we do or say has an effect"(Heidi Ayarbe).  The extended version (The truth) may have given some relief. A few stereotypes given about African Americans are they carry guns and can play basketball or are violent. Take a look at this clip from "True Blood".

Tara who was named after a plantation, who is well-educated and lashes out in anger constantly towards white people stated another stereotype when she stated “Imma get my baby daddy that just came out of prison to come and kick your teeth in”.  There stereotype was that all young African American women have baby daddies. Prison also supports the violent stereotype. When the four year old said he was going to get a gun, automatically some will think prison. If I was trying to rewrite the story I would be very descriptive of the drive by shooting, and interview adults on their outlook on crime today. If I was to interview the little boy and he said “I want a gun because I want to be a police officer” then I would show that to the viewers and encourage him to become a police officer. I would try to encourage viewers to help the world become a better place. Volunteer and donate to the homes of the injured and just give a helping hand. Give them a view of what security looks like. In the end news will be news. Here is another example of news cropping media. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/05/fox-news-assailed-for-vid_n_196719.html

Work, Work, Work.

Reflecting my last blog, I stated that I attended private school for eight years and every school I attended differed. In private school, I felt the term “work” was defined as “punishment”. The homework was considered as a very high level compared to what I was familiar with. On weekends we were assigned homework and enrichment. Enrichment was punishment. I felt that I had no choice but to do the homework. It was mandatory. The school work wasn’t as heavy.  School work seemed like a break for a moment but once the clock would hit 3:00pm; the punishment had begun.
Once I attended high school, the school work was challenging to me. Two hours were given to have the class work completed and the answers completely correct or it’s considered wrong. The class work was defined as a “competition”. The homework would have all the same answers as everyone else considering that half the class cheated after one another. When I started my first semester of college at Robert Morris it was a break from the “punishment” and the “competition”. Everything was straight forward and not as challenging but everyone was on the same page. When I started my externship at Robert Morris as an extern as a medical assistant; I started later than everyone else meaning that I was behind by two months. Once I started my eight hour shifts at Masonic Medical Center, attending school every day and working my part time job at TJ Maxx I felt that being employed and attending school was tiring. I still work part time and refer to my job at TJ Maxx as “hell”.  I feel as if it’s hell because it’s not what I enjoy doing. The pay is crap but I still arrive to work on time and still do my job. My job is unfair because everyone is on different pages. Everyone gets treated differently. Those that do their job get scolded and those that don’t receive any criticism. I chose not to quit because at the end of the day it’s just a job.  I say to myself every day I will not work here forever and that promotes me to work on my school work. Work including school work is important to me because I care how I reflect with do my job and excelling in school.
When I close my eyes I imagine someone who works as an executive. She is in charge for a business company and is very successful in her job but is very lonely in her personal life. Almost everyone I know feels that being successful takes sacrifices. My fear is that I would have to make a choice between my career and my personal life. I want to be selfish because I want both. Work makes me want to me to strive to be an ob/gyn. Works pays off. Be miserable now and happy later. My brain knows the difference between work and play. I don’t think that people that was raised in different social classes etc. view work as the same way. Everyone has their reason why they work. I work because I love to build my resume and because I want to take up time in my day. When I think of work I think of it as a mission. When you accomplish one mission you will continue on to the next.
According to the reading I was a bit confused. I felt that it was given you an idea and implanting it inside your head and challenging you to think of something else. I also felt that it was talking about how work sometimes promote negativity and as your job you have to learn how to carry yourself as a professional and to not show the flaws of the product or the company. If you tell the truth then tell it to the i.e. public for them to understand you while showing the positive side. I have to do this at my job when I promote credit cards. I know it’s wrong but it’s my job. I will tell them anything just for them to sign up; and just for the 2-second praise that I will receive from management.

My Refection on "The Hidden Curriculum of Work" by Anyon

After reading, "The Hidden Curriculum of Work" by the infamous Jean Anyon it was clear to understand the different social classes and how they differentiate in education for young children and continued beyond that. I believe that although many years have passed the difference between the social classes remain the same. Most of society would be categorized as working class and middle class. My experience with the educational system as a student has bounced back and forth as if I continued to go through unnecessary obstacles. I related to every example that was giving in the reading. When I attended elementary school, I was enrolled in a private school and attended for eight long years. I believed that this private school was exactly like the executive elite school. Since it was a private school, it was granted that they were allowed to act on physical disciplinary actions. If one student in the class were to speak the entire class will face punishment. That influenced me to learn the alphabets in sign language and I still use that skill till this day. We received high school level work and completing term papers on African American novelists. I had very long nights and plenty of tutors but my childhood shortened. I reached a point that I was going to mentally break down. I didn’t realize that they were preparing us for going into high school because it was difficult to figure out how writing the Preamble and the Gettysburg Address fifty to a hundred times had anything to do about evolving into a well-educated high school student. In later years, I discovered that discipline helps the process of molding.
High school was a positive transition but it was not as challenging as elementary. High school was closely related to the Middle-Class School. High school was all about obtaining the correct answers and turning assignments on time. It was easy to mark an X on the incorrect answer and not go over the material afterwards. Some teachers were different than others. Some teachers would care about the students and would feel bothered if a student disrupts the class; while others teachers felt like if a student missed the material then that student deserves the grade that will show on report card day. The high school I attended wasn’t into discipline; because they wanted the students to be able to express their creativity. The trouble makers were the popular ones and the ones who actually did succeed were in the background. I was neither. I felt like I didn’t have to work so hard since having a C average was ok. My teachers knew I was smart and felt like I should have been on a higher level but I constantly refused. I felt like it wouldn’t have meant anything. This continued into college when I attended Robert Morris University. Everything repeated all over again.
My goal at Roosevelt University is to maintain grades higher than a C average. Elementary and high school helped me into growing in all subjects and revealing my talents. Reading, writing, and work should definitely be taking seriously because it affects everyone in the long run. The different schools that were listed in the reading declared that the United States is judgmental.  I feel that every school should get on the same level as the executive elite school no matter if the family of the student is rich or poor. Now that I have grown to understand anything I do whether it’s positive or negative it affects me. Although I have my reasons why I chose the medical field as my career choice, I feel as if I belong in the corporate world.
